ASSINIBOIA FORMS NEW CLURING CLUB

Meeting of Resident Curlers Organizes - Will Affiliate With Manitoba Curling Association

The Assiniboia Curling Club was formally organized at a meeting of the residents of that district, held last night at St. James, when, in addition to electing officers to pilot the club through its initial year, plans were laid for an early initial year, plans were formed to take advantage of the two sheets of curling ice which the municipality is adding to the hockey and skating rink it is building at the corner of Lyle and Portage, and the enthusiasm with which the project was greeted in the area was evidenced to the full at last night's meeting. Several of those present immediately paid up their membership fees, and the club decided to get arrangements completed for an orthodox start and affiliation with the Manitoba Curling Association will be applied for forthwith.

J. Fred Palmer, secretary of the M.C.A., gave a short historical talk to the meeting, and materially assisted with the work of organization. It was decided to call for applications for membership right away, in view of the fact that a limit will have to be put on, as only two sheets of ice are available. The executive was empowered to get rocks and all the necessary adjuncts together, and officers were elected as follows:    - . -
Patron - Reeve Richardson, - President - C.A. Andrews, - First Vice-president G.R. Carter, - Second Vice-president - Alex Bell, Secretary-treasurer, W.S. MacDonald, - Chaplain - Rev. Mr. McKay - Executive - Messrs. John Fleming, Budd, J.C. Irvine, A.L.. Best and Perrie.

Deer Lodge Curlers In Enjoyable Banquet

The Deer Lodge Curling Club wound up a successful season's play with its first annual banquet, held in the St. James School. The function was greatly enjoyed by some 125 curlers and lady friends who attended. After a hearty supper, a number of toasts were drunk, the speakers being the Reeve. Chas. Holden, Messrs. Parker, White, Andrews, Love and Graham and Mrs. Robert Love. Among the distinguished guests were John T. Haig and J. Fred Pa1mer.
After an enjoyable musical programme, Mr. Holden presented his shield and prizes to the winners of the Holden competition, and the Reeve presented his silver trophy of the Richardson event.  Other donations of prizes were John Reid, Andrew Moffatt, H. Smith, G.H. Parker, C.A. Andrews, A.J. Perrie, A. Brown and Messrs. Geagle and Hales. Forty-four prizes in all were distributed among a membership of fifty-six.
The social committee and the lady curlers are to be congratulated on their success in furnishing the best banquet and entertainment ever held in St. James and according to some of the city curlers who were present, a better curling banquet was never held in Winnipeg and for no other reason than that the ladies were present and the gentlemen were content to sacrifice their after-dinner smoke, which kept the atmosphere clean and sweet to the end.

Six-Sheet Curling Rink for Deer Lodge

Deer Lodge Curling Club will erect a rink which will make it second in point of size in Winnipeg, and district. Tenders for the erection of a six-sheet rink, to be constructed on the corner of Truro and Bruce, adjacent to Deer Lodge, have been called, and it is expected that work will commence in the near future to permit the rink being ready for the opening of the curling season.
The new Deer Lodge rink will take second place to that of the Granite rink, and as signal success marked the small two-sheet rink with which the club was content last season, it confidently felt that the interest created by last year's showing will more than suffice to make the new plan an unqualified success.

Deer Lodge Curlers to Meet Next Week

That the new Deer Lodge Curling club is going to be a very active organization this winter is assured from the increased interest that has been shown for so early in the season. President Parker has called a meeting for next Thursday evening at the St. James school house on Linwood Street, when further plans for the new rink will be formulated. With a new six sheet rink the members are looking forward to a big season, and a large turnout of old and prospective members is wanted at the meeting.
The club intends to make every effort to acquire inclusion in City divisions for the bonspiel primaries, and a big drive for membership is planned. Applications for stock in the holding company can be made to Secretary, E.B. Barber, 118 Douglas Park Road, and as the west-end residents took up the game with great zest last season, no difficulty is anticipated in disposing of all shares. The club, under the able presidency of G.H. Parker, is putting the climax to a most successful inaugural season, by this new undertaking and the building will be fitted with comfortable club rooms, and all the appurtenances of a modern rink.

DEER LODGE CURLERS PLAN BANNER SEASON

The Deer Lodge Curling Club, at its semi-annual meeting in Linwood School, decided to conduct competitions for two classes this coming season, namely, A and B classes. This will enable the skips in A class to pack their rinks, and playing together through the club competitions, will make them better fit to enter the bonspiel next February. The club expects to have in the neighborhood of 150 members this winter, and with a new six-sheet rink to accommodate them all, some good curling is expected.
The Club anticipates going after the O'Grady cup again at an early date, and hopes to make a better showing than it did last year, as it will have more good curlers to draw from and better ice to practice on. Work on the new rink has now been started and is progressing nicely.
It is the intention of the recruiting committee to round up as many new members as they can before the season opens and it is hoped to make each member a share-holder in the club. Anyone wishing to join the Deer Lodge Curling Club, or desiring information regarding the same, should communicate with the secretary-treasurer, W.S. MacDonald, 310 Moorgate Street, St. James, West 537.

WINNIPEG CURLING BRANCHES OUT WITH THREE NEW RINKS THIS WINTER

With three new curling clubs to add to the enjoyment of the sport, the game of curling will have more followers in Winnipeg this winter than ever.  The Deer Lodge Club has erected a magnificient six sheet rink on Truro Street, just 800 feet north of Portage, which is a credit to the booster of the game in this thriving district. The building is 165 X 86 feet, and is modern in every detail. The main waiting room is very comfortable and roomy with a glass front. There is also a ladies' waiting room upstairs. There will be four sheets in the centre and one sheet of ice in each ditch, and compares most favorably with most of the city rinks. The officers of the club are:

President, C.A. Andrews, 180 Lyle Street; vice-president, G.H. Parker; 2nd vice-president, A. Perrie; secretary and treasurer, W.D. McDonald, 310 Moorgate Street; assistant secretary, J. Douglas; executive: A. Tanny, A. Brown, A. Panting, R. Love, .A. Hales.

DEER LODGE CLUB IN BIG WIND-UP

Ladies Assist in Making Annual Banquet Memorable Occasion in Brief History of Club

Inaugurating a policy that will no doubt be adopted by many other city clubs in the future by the inclusion of the ladies in its functions, the Deer Lodge Curling Club celebrated its second year in existence with a monster banquet at the Linwood School last night, over two hundred attending. The community spirit which has characterized the play all winter predominated throughout a most interesting evening's entertainment.
That the building of a rink that compared most favorably with the best in the city is a big acquisition to the district, was commented on by a number of speakers, and the feeling of the gathering was that the game of curling is going to thrive in the Deer Lodge vicinity for years to come.
President, John O'Hare and Secretary, Fred Palmer, of the Manitoba Curling Association; J.H. Holman, of the Assiniboine; Ossie Graham, of the Heather, and R.J. Buckingham, of the Civic, who were-guests of honor, all voiced the opinion that no club in Winnipeg has shown such rapid strides as the Deer Lodge Club. They congratulated the officers on the wonderful achievement, and looked for even greater progress in the future. Secretary Palmer gave an interesting address, in which he reviewed the progress curling has made in the last few years.
Everyone agreed that the idea of having the ladies take part in the events is worthy of note. Other clubs would be well to follow. Even the boys were present, three rinks of school lads having taken part in a special competition after school hours. President Andrews made a very capable Chairman and kept things humming all the time. The handsome array of prizes, which filled the large sized table to capacity, called for favorable comment from the visitors. The presentation of the prizes was a most pleasant affair, all the awards being well distributed among the men and the women curlers. The annual meeting and the election of officers takes place next Tuesday evening at the rink. The ladies convene Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
