TeamForrestThe furnace was repaired by morning and it was a hot time upstairs in the lounge on Saturday night January 2nd.  A very large crowd gathered upstairs for the send-off for the 2010 Junior Men's Provincial Champions Team Forrest from Deer Lodge.  There were formal presentations to the team by Curl Manitoba board member Marlene Mori, Deer Lodge President Kris Keough and Carl Witherspoon from the Carberry Curling Club. The team members and coach individually responded with their comments.  There were many happy faces amongst the winners of the silent auction and the 50/50 draw that followed. Page Playoff 2 versus 2 Game
At 9:00 am
Sam Good of Pembina and Michael Johnson from Assiniboine Memorial took to the ice for the 2 versus 2 game.  Good started by stealing one in the first end when Johnson was light on his last rock draw.  Johnson then rebounded in the second by scoring 4.  He then proceeded to steal the next 3 ends  before Good counted 1 in the sixth then shook hands.  The previous night's back to back tiebreaker games had probably taken their toll on the defending champion.  The Johnson squad would have to play again at 1 pm against the loser of the 1 versus one game taking place at the same time 3 sheets over.
Page Playoff 1 versus 1 Game

This game featured Red Group winner Alex Forrest of Deer Lodge against Black Group winner Jared Kolomaya of Stonewall.  This was quite the match.  Kolomaya started with a 2 in the first end.  Forrest eventually tied it up at  3 at the 5th end break.  A big 3 by Forrest in the 8th end proved to be the difference in the match when Kolomaya could only manage 2 in the ninth.  Forrest used the hammer coming home to seal the victory.  Kolomaya was unable to  out count Forrest's shot stone with his last draw attempt.  Kolomaya would have to play Johnson next in the Semi Final.  Forrest earned 4 hours rest until the 5 pm Championship Final.
Semi Final Game
This game did not start well for Johnson.  Koloymaya stole 3 in the 2nd end to go up 4 - 0.  Johnson responded  well and chipped away at the lead.  The rest of the game had  all single scores in each end with Johnson stealing 4 times to win 6 - 5.  In the 10th,  Johnson's rock in the 12 foot out counted Kolomaya's last rock take out which rolled a little too far.  Johnson would then get to play Forrest next after a short break.
Championship Game
After blanking the first end Forrest took 2 in the second end.  He then stole 2 in the third to go up 4 - 0  over Johnson.
It was beginning to look like the Semi Final game again for Johnson.   However this time there was no magic comeback.  Johnson could only manage a single in the fourth end with the hammer before Forrest threw a 3 back at him in the next end.  This left Johnson trailing Forrest 7 - 1 at the fifth end break.  Johnson scored a single in the sixth before shaking to concede the championship to Forrest.
Closing Ceremonies

After a short break the official Closing Ceremonies took place.  Ian Mahon was the emcee with dignitaries including Curl MB Vp Cindy Maddock, Head Official Nancy Rummery and Deer Lodge Host Chairperson Bruce McBeth.  After the customary speeches Cindy made the presentations to the teams.  First up for the finalist plaques was the Michael Johnson team from Assiniboine Memorial with 3rd Brian Thomson, 2nd Danial Gagne, lead Derek Blanchard and coach Greg Blanchard.   It was then the turn for the new Junior Men's Provincial champion  Alex Forrest team with 3rd Joey Witherspoon, 2nd Connor Njegovan, lead Mike Neufeld and coach Tom Casper  to step forward.  With assistance from Nancy Rummery, Cindy then presented the winners with the Championship trophy, jackets, crests and plaquesSkip Alex Forrest then stepped forward for a few brief words of thanks.  The last presentation by Cindy was a framed certificate from Curl Manitoba to Bruce McBeth for the Deer Lodge Curling Club.  This marked the end of the Closing Ceremonies.  The winning team was then off for their official team photos, filling out competitor forms for the National Championship and being measured for championship apparel before they could join the reception held in the upstairs lounge.  Next month the team will be off to represent Manitoba in the Junior Mens National Championship to be held Jan 16-24, 2010 in Sorel-Tracey, QC.

Final Round Robin Draw in the Black Group
When Riley Smith of Pembina lost his last game it opened the door to two other teams to join him for a set of tiebreakers.
Sam Good also of Pembina, defeated Jared Kolomaya of Stonewall while Tyler Drews of La Salle won his game over Hildebrand of Deer Lodge.  With these wins Good and Drews made it a 3 way playoff for the 2nd place Black Group spot in the Page Playoffs.   Because this would require 2 draws to complete it meant that the Page Playoffs would have to be rescheduled for Tuesday morning.  Smith got the bye into the 2nd tiebreaker game  based on head to head wins record.   Kolomaya had sewn up top spot in the Black Group on Sunday and will be in the 1 versus 1 Page Playoff game.
Special Awards
The votes were in and the tallies made for the Asham Coaching Excellence Award and the Susan Galbraith Sportsmanship Award.
Head Official Nancy Rummery made the presentations just prior to the final round robin draw for the Red Group.
The
Asham Coaching Excellence Award went to  Bill Kitching coach of the Kolomaya team from Stonewall,....click on photo
The
Susan Galbraith Award for Sportsmanship at the Manitoba Provincial Junior Men’s Championships went to Scott Peterson, 3rd on the Hildebrand team from Deer Lodge.,....click on photo.
Final Round Robin Draw in the Red Group

Tiebreaker Results

In the first Tiebreaker game at 4 pm  at
Sam Good of Pembina won 9 - 4  over Tyler Drews of La Salle.
Good then advanced to the 2nd tie-breaker against his club mate Riley Smith at 7:45 pm.

Good will be in the 2 versus 2 game of the Page Playoffs.
The Page Playoff games are scheduled for 9:00 am on Tuesday December 22.

> Sunday Action (posted Dec 20, 2009)

In the Black Group
In a battle of undefeated teams on the 8:30 am draw, Jared Kolomaya of Stonewall
defeated Riley Smith from Pembina in an extra end.  Kolomaya then ran it to 6 in a row on the 4 pm draw and guaranteed himself a spot in the Page Playoffs on Monday night.  Smith rebounded with a win on the 4 pm draw to sew up no worse than tie breaker spot.
Still in the running for the playoffs at 4 - 2 are
Sam Good of Pembina and Tyler Drews of La Salle. They will need some help. The final round robin draw for the Black Group goes at 8:30 am Monday.
In  the Red Group
Michael Johnson from Assiniboine Memorial won both his games on Sunday to remain the only undefeated team in the  Group at 6-0.  The team has earned entry into the Page Playoffs.  Alex Forrest of Deer Lodge split his two games and at 5-1 is ensured no worse than a tie breaker spot.  He could still finish atop the Group if he can defeat Johnson in the last game of the round.  Steen Sigurdson who defeated Forrest is at 4-2.  Sigurdson still has a chance to play Forrest again in a tie breaker if he wins and Forrest loses to Johnson.  The final round robin draw for the Red Group goes at 12:15 pm Monday.

> Saturday Curling (posted Dec 19, 2009)

Curling, curling nothing but curling all day long !  No special events to have to squeeze in and divert our attention away from the march towards crowning a Junior Men's champion for this season.  Unless it was the trip by Bruce McBeth and Gord Fingland to the landfill to empty our overflowing dumpster.
In any case, another four draws of  games has  brought us to just past the midpoint of the round robin.  Still undefeated after 4 games i
n the Red Group are Michael Johnson from Assiniboine Memorial and Alex Forrest of Deer Lodge.  The Black Group ranks of the undefeated is now down to two : Jared Kolomaya of Stonewall and Riley Smith from Pembina.
The last game to finish in the evening was the match between defending champion Sam Good of Pembina and Ian Campbell of Charleswood.  This exciting match went to the last rock with Good taking the win.  His record now stands at  3 - 1.

> Let the games begin ! (posted Dec 18, 2009)

The first draw of the round robin kicked off bright and early at 8:30 am on Friday.
It was time for everyone to put on their game faces and get serious.  Crowds built during the day, 50/50 pots grew after each draw as well. The break after the third draw was filled with preparations for the Opening Ceremonies and the traditional throwing of the first rock.  The teams were lead onto the ice by the piper and joined by dignitaries including : Steven Fletcher,  MP for Charleswood, Bonnie Korzeniowski, MLA , Councillor Grant Nordman (subbing for Scott Fielding) and Curl MB Vp Cindy Maddock.  Once again Emcee Ian Mahon and the Piper toasted each other to get the ceremonies started.  Murray Peterson, coach of the Deer Lodge Hildebrand team, sang a hearty rendition of O Canada.  As was the case the previous evening,  the speeches were brief.  Ian then introduced all the players on all the teams to an appreciative crowd.  The ceremonial throwing of the first rock was done by the Grassie family with Andrew Melnuk filling out the team.  Donna Grassie held the broom for Sean Grassie while the sweeping was done by Jack Grassie and Andrew.  After Sean had spoken at the banquet the previous night he had gone back to Brandon to curl and drove back just in time to throw his one rock for us (and then hit the road again).
We got back to curling again after 8:15 and wound up the 4th draw by 11 pm.  Another very busy day.
After this first day of curling action there were 5 undefeated teams with 2 wins each.  In the Black Group these included Daniel Birchard-Pembina, Jared Kolomaya -Stonewall and Riley Smith -Pembina.  In the Red Group it was Alex Forrest- Deer Lodge
and Michael Johnson -Assiniboine Memorial.  For the complete standings click on ....standings.
Of course there were pictures taken.  A special thanks to Reg Sims for his efforts.

> A Busy Thursday (posted Dec 17, 2009)

Although the actual games don't start until Friday,  there was quite a lot of activity at Deer Lodge on Thursday.
The 16 teams started arriving at noon to register and collect their packages.  The ice was busy all afternoon with team practices and skills based rankings.  At the same time final preparations for the banquet were underway upstairs.  At 5:30 pm the Team Briefing Meeting kept the teams occupied while the head table guests gathered for a reception in the boardroom.  The piper then lead the dignitaries upstairs to the waiting teams.  A great meal was served followed by brief words from the head table.  Former Junior Mens Provincial and Canadian Mixed champion Sean Grassie was the highlight speaker with his experiences as a junior curler.  For some photos click on ...Photo Gallery.
