Monday April 2nd was Championship day at the Deer Lodge Curling Club. The 9:30 a.m. Semi Final matched Sean Grassie's foursome from Deer Lodge and David Hamblin from Beausejour. Grassie was leading by one after six ends when he put 4 up on the board in seven to take a commanding 8 - 3 lead. Hamblin conceded at the end of eight ends. This set up a rematch of Grassie and Carruthers in the Championship Final. The Final at 1:30 p.m. was all we had hoped it would be. The two teams had finished atop their groups in Round Robin play and proved evenly matched in the 1 vrs 1 Page Playoff game the previous evening. Either team would make a fine representative for the province. The Final was a tight game with few points up on the board. The game was tied at one at the end of six. The seventh was long and complicated with many rocks in play. Grassie eventually stole one to go up 2 -1. In the eighth Carruthers responded with two to take the lead at 3 - 2. The ninth was blanked. In the tenth, Carruthers was counting 3 with a cluster of rocks when Grassie threw his final stone. Rather than draw to force an extra end Grassie chose to go for a triple and count two for the win. Sean had made a triple and several doubles earlier in the game. After the rocks settled one of Carruthers' was still shot giving Reid the championship with a 4 -2 final score. Skip Reid Carruthers, third Theresa Cannon, second Jason Gunnlaugson, lead Sarah Wazney and coach Greg Wazney received the MNP trophy, their provincial jackets and crests at the closing ceremonies immediately after the game. In the the 8:30 a.m. final draw of Red Group action Reid Carruthers defeated Bill Kuran to take the top spot in the group with a 6-1 record and a free pass to the 1 vrs 1 Page Playoff game. David Hamblin won his last game against Kyle Werenich to earn second in Red and a spot in the 2 vrs 2 Page Playoff game. -In the 12:15 p.m. final draw of Black Group Round Robin play Sean Grassie earned the top spot in the group at 6 -1 with a victory over David Bohn. James Kirkness lost to Kelly Robertson leaving those two rinks tied for second at 5 - 2. This meant at least one Tie Breaker game would be required before the Page Playoffs could begin. The final game on the ice was between Don Chatham and Greg Todoruk with Chatham needing a victory to get into a tie with Kirkness and Robertson. The tight game went down to the last rock with Todoruk spoiling Chatham's day by drawing to the button for two and the victory. -In the 4:00 p.m. Tie Breaker game Kelly Robertson stole the victory when a Kirkness raise takeout attempt with his last rock was off by the smallest fraction. With the victory Robertson earned a spot in the 2 vrs 2 Page Playoff game against David Hamblin. -In the 7:45 p.m. 2 vrs 2 Page Playoff game David Hamblin jumped into a quick 4 - 0 lead over Kelly Robertson after two ends. Robertson fought back to tie after 5 ends. A big 4 ender by Hamblin in the sixth end proved too much to overcome for Robertson and he conceded victory to Hamblin at the end of the eight end being down 10 - 5. Hamblin advanced to the 9:30 a.m. Semi FInal on Monday. -The 1 vrs 1 Page Playoff game between Carruthers and Grassie was tied 3 - 3 after six. In the seventh Grassie took the lead with a 3 and appeared to have the upper hand with only 3 ends remaining. Carruthers was held to one in the 8th but started to make make it interesting with a steal of 1 in the ninth. Carruthers stole another point in the 10th to tie the game when Grassie was unable to remove a Carruthers stone from the four foot. In the extra end Carrruthers third Theresa Cannon buried a rock on the tee line behind guards. With his final rock Sean Grassie was unable to navigate his draw through a port leaving the Carruthers team with the victory and a bye into the Championship final on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Grassie moves on to the 9:30 a.m. Semi FInal on Monday against Hamblin. **** March 31 **** The last two games on the Saturday night draw ended in dramatic fashion. James Kirkness handed Sean Grassie his first loss on a long angle bump of a rock on the far outside of the sheet to the four foot to count 2 and take the game 7-6. This leaves Kirkness and Grassie tied at the top of the Black Group with 5 - 1 records. Keeping his playoff hopes alive Kelly Robertson with his last rock made a gentle tap of a David Bohn rock on the button to score two and win the hard fought game. Robertson is tied with Don Chatham , both with 4-2 records. Earlier in Red Group action Reid Carruthers defeated David Hamblin in a close game to take the sole lead in the Red Group at 5-1. Hamblin is tied with Bill Kuran with a record of 4 -2. Ken Lawn sits alone at 3-3. **** March 30 ****
