Associate Leagues Night                                                                                             (posted November 30, 2003)

This annual fun night hosted by Deer Lodge to show our appreciation to all the Associate Leagues of the club took place on Saturday November 29.  This was a little earlier in the year's social calendar due to our busy schedule of MCA events in the early part of 2004. Teams representing the Well-to-Do, Deer Lodge Ladies, Wednesday  Ladies, Saturday Mixed, Friday Mixed, St. James-Assiniboia Teachers, and Red River College were present. The club was represented by a team of directors skipped by President Cliff Murphy.  The evening  consisted of two three end fun "games" followed by prizes, food and refreshments.
Each of the ends in the fun games had their unique rules to test the skills of the players and a scoring system that allowed us to rank all the teams.  This was our mini version of the Continental Cup which was being televised as we competed.   After the first game (and while the curlers were enjoying a break in the lounge)  the points were tallied for each team.  A free round of refreshments for all teams beating the Directors team total score for the night was the incentive to go back on the ice.   The Saturday Mixed team held a one point edge in the standings after the first game and were ceded in first place for  the second round of games.  This cocky lot were matched up against the second placed  Director's team.  The competition was heated but sadly not close as Cliff led his Directors team to a sound victory.  After the second round of games we once more adjourned to the lounge.   An evening snack of soup and sandwiches was awaiting us upstairs.  The total points for the night were calculated and announced to the crowd by Cliff.  The Directors team proved to be poor hosts by being run away winners of  the competition.   This was an unexpected display of curling prowess by the directors (just look at results after the first round of league play).  In order to avoid a call for tests of illegal substance use,  all the teams were awarded a free round of refreshments.  The Saturday Mixed team was awarded first place prizes for the event as they lead the total point standings for all the associate leagues.   The race for the last place prize was decided by a tie breaker count back.  The team from Red River "won" out over the St. James teachers.  The tasty soup and sandwiches catered by Joan Hooten and cheery bar services provided Kathy Switzer and their staffs rounded out the pleasant evening for all.  Special thanks to Ian Brown for  organizing the evening.
