Harold Tanasichuk – Curler
Harold Tanasichuk (Hal) was born and raised in Clanwilliam, Manitoba. After working in the mines up north he settled in Winnipeg in 1958. Representing Civic Cal and later Deer Lodge, Hal Tanasichuk has appeared in 25 provincial championships, which includes 7 provincial men’s, 11 mixed, 6 senior men’s and 1 Masters provincial. A dominate player in the Mixed competition, he has won 3 provincial mixed championships in 1976, 1977 and 1986 and finished in the runner up position 3 times in 1971, 1973 and 1980. In 1977, after winning the Provincial Mixed title he traveled to the Canadian Championship held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he guided his team to a 10-1 record and claimed the fourth Canadian Mixed Championship for Manitoba. In the other trips to the National Mixed his teams placed third in 1976 and fourth in 1986. The Mixed Championships in 1976 and 1977, were the first and only provincial championships won by a team representing the Civic Caledonian.
In the Men’s competition, it is noteworthy that in his first British Consols appearance in 1970 in Dauphin he had an opportunity to eliminate the Don Duguid team on the A2 side of the draw only to slide too far in his last rock draw attempt, he then lost in the extra end. History will show that the Duguid team went on win back to back championships beginning that year. At the Senior’s level, he won the 1989 Senior Provincial Championship and went to the National Seniors in Kenora, Ontario where his team finished in fourth place with an 8-4 record. He also finished in the runner up position at the 1990 Provincial Seniors, losing the final to Jim Ursel. Hal captured the
MCA Bonspiel Grand Aggregate title in
1976 and two bonspiel main events being the Eaton Trophy in 1975 and
the Henry Birks trophy in 1976. In 1971, he
skipped a team to victory in the Charleswood Little Car Bonspiel. Hal was made a
Honourary
Life Member of the Deer Lodge Curling Club in 1998. He was inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Hame in 2006. |
