Jimmy Welsh Team 1947 and 1954 Provincial Men’s Championship Team 1947 Canadian Men’s Championship Team

Although these players had met with success in earlier competitions, the team was put together in 1947 when Alex Welsh joined brother Jimmy as his third man replacing Fred Smith. Their first year together brought instant success as they marched through the British Consols undefeated to claim the Provincial Championship and advanced to the Macdonald Brier here they went 9-0 to capture the Canadian Men’s Championship. They repeated as Provincial Men’s Champions in 1954 but finished seventh at the Brier. In all they made ten provincial appearances and established a 28 and 8 record. Along with the two provincial championships they also finished in the runner up position on three other occasions in 1949, 1951 and 1952. They were recognized as a superior hitting team. In the Manitoba Curling Association bonspiel they won seven trophies, which included two Grand Aggregate titles in 1949 and 1952 and four main event victories in 1949, 1952 1953 and 1954. They also won the City Championship in 1947. Jimmy was inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall Of Fame in the curler category in 1988. The team was inducted into the Manitoba Curling Hall Of Fame in 1997 in the team category. |
