Jayne
Sims – 2006 Sam Brown Volunteer Award Winner
Jayne was guided into the sport of curling by her sister Penny Flock
some 23 years ago. She began by sparing in the Deer Lodge Ladies
League and has been an active member ever since. She served on
the executive of the league for several years. It’s funny how one
can join a Board one year just to be responsible for Prizes and somehow
graduate to being President the very next year.
Her first skip was Cheryl Kurtz. Cheryl made a lasting impression
on Jayne towards the love of the game and her approach in
encouraging others to develop their skills.
Then her third at the time, Susan Copeland, got her started on
her actual teaching path. Jayne acquired her Level 1
coaching credentials and dedicated a significant part of her free time
over a 15 year period to teaching the game of curling, especially to
Juniors. She was also involved in the set up of the curling
course set up for the Learn to Curl program found in the City’s
Leisure Guide.
There was some variety to her training experiences to note.
This included demonstrating the game outdoors at the Forks for
several weekends one year, nearly freezing on the New Years eve.
There she was on the outside on the ice behind the Johnson terminal
while the less hardy watched and tipped their drinks from inside the
nearby restaurant.
Jayne also had a memorable trip all the way up to Churchill to instruct.
Jayne has also been active in volunteering her time at several curling
events :
-the Scott Tournament of Hearts that DLCC hosted nearby at the Civic
Centre. The first time that event was moved from a curling club to a
bigger venue.
-the 1991 World’s held here in Winnipeg where she was involved with
giving tours.
-the Coca Cola Classic held here at the club, on the entertainment
committee, where she and her husband Reg had the upstairs lounge
resembling a western fort.
One annual event where she continues to volunteer her time is of
special note. That is the MCA bonspiel where she has been
involved with posting and verifying game results at their headquarters
for the last 19 years. She worked many a night until 3 am waiting
for results to come in from the late draws.
The highlights noted above are just a brief summary of why Jayne was honored as the
2006 recipient of the Sam Brown Memorial Volunteer Award.
